SHIPWRECKS

SS Beaver wrecked, circa 1880s. VMM Item Number: 15886

Some of the worst maritime disasters have occurred in British Columbia. In fact, the southwest coast of Vancouver Islands was once known to mariners as the Graveyard of the Pacific because of its treacherous waterways and high number of casualties. Since 1786, over 70 ships have been wrecked there.
